Premiere of the first national ballet of Karelia "Sampo" was held on March, 27, 1959. In the same year the ballet Helmer Sinisalo was shown during the Decade of the Karelian art in Moscow and became the present event of the Decade. The capital press at those years has put this performance in a line with the most significant achievements of the big ballet.
Later "Sampo" has been successfully presented on the sixth and eighth World festivals of youth and students in Helsinki and in Moscow, on performances in Finland in 1968, was shown in many cities of Russia.
In 1985 the rebirth of the ballet was held. The new edition of "Sampo" and its founders, the composer Helmer Sinisalo, the ballet master Igor Smirnov, the soloists Natalia Galtsina and Tatyana Ledovskih, have become winners of the State premium of Russia named after M.I.Glinka in 1986. The ballet was applauded again by spectators of Finland and Russia.
Today, after forty years after the first premiere, the ballet continues to live on the stage of the Musical theatre of Karelia. This is the gold fund of the Karelian art.
